Slide Cleaning

The only actual cleaning we do is to use an air brush to try to remove any dust from the surface - and to be honest it is barely worth the effort since most dust remains attached. If we attempted to clean the slide by wiping it with something there is a risk that any small piece of grit will scratch the surface. So most of the dust removal is done digitally - the scanner uses a special wavelength of light which highlights lumps on, and scratches in, the celluloid. The software then knows to ignore those areas and try to patch the dust spot with what it thinks is the right colour. This is (as you can probably imagine) quite a tricky thing to get right 100% of the time, so the scanner errs on the side of caution and sometimes just leaves the dust spot.

However we do clean mouldy slides ... for a fee.
